What are the most common causes for clogged drains?

Clogged drains can also be caused by foreign objects that might have been flushed down the toilet such as:
Wet wipes, napkins and paper towels (which should never be flushed because they don’t break down in water). Hair, which usually clogs pipes due to its coarseness. Toothpaste tubes or toothbrushes (usually the bristles are left behind). Facial tissues or papers.

These should never be put down drains because they will not biodegrade easily. Plastic bags, which wrap around the inside of your pipes causing them to clog up. Hard lumps, which could be soap and other things that have been used over time.

How do I know when my drains need to be cleaned?

If you notice any of the following, it is time to call a plumber.

The drain water smells or has changed color.

There are clogs in the drain or on the outside of pipes that go from the floor to the main drain line.

You see bubbles coming out of your drains. Your drains take longer than usual to drain water. The first sign may be a foul odor coming from your drains or toilets.

Can you get rid of clogs on your own?

To get rid of clogs, you can try to unclog the toilet first. If this doesn’t work, it may be necessary to call a plumber; The easiest way to remove stubborn clogs is by pouring hot water down the drain followed by vinegar.

Pour enough so that both items flow down the drain, and allow them to sit for a while before you run any more water; If your clogs are due to grease buildup or food particles, pour boiling water down the drain. This will loosen up and dissolve fat buildup allowing them to go down the drain easily; You want to avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach or Drano in your drains because they can corrode certain materials causing damage in your pipes and septic systems.

Is it possible for toilet paper to clog a sewer line?

No.  While it is true that toilet paper is a non-biodegradable product, once flushed, it will disintegrate rapidly in the water and thus not create an obstruction.

What can I do to prevent my sink drains from getting clogged?

Don’t put anything in your sink drain. Sinks are for water, not garbage disposal. Do not throw away small things that get caught in the drain like hair and soap scum. Those things will remain in your pipe and can eventually clog your sink.

How do tree roots get into my sewer line?

Tree roots can get into the sewer line through tree root penetrations, holes or cracks in the foundation, and other openings near the sewer. Tree root penetration is when a tree grows through an opening or crack in the foundation. Other openings are located where tree roots grow under sidewalks and driveways.

The opening may be large enough for a tree to grow through without affecting surrounding soil. However, if you suspect that your trees have caused damage to your sewer line inside your home, you should call a qualified plumbing professional to evaluate and repair the problem.

Why is my toilet not draining?

A few possible reasons for this problem include: Your toilet is clogged and therefore not draining properly. This can either be because the water pressure in your house is low, or because there are too many hair strands in your drain trap (the little piece of plastic that comes with most toilets), causing it to become clogged up.

The latter is a very common problem, and can be solved by reaching into the trap and manually removing any hidden lint or excess hair that’s been collected inside. If this isn’t an option for you (or if you’re concerned about potentially damaging the device), then you should have a plumber unclog your toilet to see what they find.

Is a clogged shower drain an emergency?

If you have a shower, and it has been clogged by hair, soap, shampoo or anything else that would prevent the water from draining (or if it has started leaking, causing scalding water to emerge), then it is an emergency. You can immediately remove the blockage by removing all of the items in the drain that would prevent the water from draining. Clean out any soap residue as well, which will otherwise cause more damage to your pipes. Another option is to call a plumber!
